Your itinerary includes a visit to the sustainable community projects, where you will have the opportunity to engage in discussions about the Kichwa worldview, including their knowledge of medicinal plants. Embark on a captivating walk along the Mama Cuna path, immersing yourself in the wonders of nature. This trail offers a remarkable chance to witness diverse wildlife, including ceiba trees, strangler figs, bamboo canes, endemic vines, and shrubs exclusive to the Yasuní region.

In the afternoon, following a satisfying local lunch, prepare to paddle through the Añangu stream—a captivating blackwater ecosystem. Here, you can marvel at monkeys leaping from tree to tree, spot caimans lurking in the waters, and if you’re lucky, even catch glimpses of giant river otters as they skillfully hunt for fish. As the day winds down, relish a traditional dinner infused with the enticing flavors of the Amazon, such as maito—grilled fish enveloped in a «Bijao» leaf.

For the adventurous at heart, be daring and sample the grilled worms known locally as «chontakuru,» derived from the «chonta» palm. Following dinner, equip yourself with a flashlight for a captivating nocturnal walk around the lodge, allowing you to observe various reptiles, insects, and even elusive night monkeys in their natural habitat.

 PARROT CLAY-LICK VIEWING, VISITING A COMMUNITY PROJECT & OBSERVATION TOWER

Start your day with an early breakfast before embarking on a motorboat ride to one of the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve’s highlights—the parrot clay lick along the banks of River Napo. From the boat, equipped with binoculars and a camera, you’ll have the chance to witness flocks of blue-headed, yellow-crowned parrots, and dusky-headed parakeets.

Follow a 30-minute walk along the «Pericos» trail, leading you to a forest blind where you can directly observe the incredible parakeet clay lick. Here, you’ll encounter up to 11 species of parrots and parakeets, including parrotlets and macaws. Keep an eye out for fascinating mammals such as howler monkeys, tapirs, and peccaries, which visit the lick to drink water and obtain essential minerals.

Next, explore the intercultural interpretation center «Kuri Muyu,» meaning «golden seed» in the native language. Managed by the knowledgeable women of the community, also known as «mamakuna,» this center offers insights into Kichwa culture, crafts, customs, and the traditional use of natural resources. Immerse yourself in the rich heritage of the aboriginal community.

After enjoying lunch at the community’s dining hall, take a relaxing break at the lodge before embarking on a one-hour hike to reach the observation tower. Rising 35 meters above the forest floor, the tower provides an ideal vantage point to spot a variety of birds, including howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, toucans, parrots, and even sloths.

Conclude the day with a special evening activity aboard the ancestral catamaran on the Napo River. SACRED WAYUSA RITUAL, GOODBYE AND RETURN TO QUITO

Rise early, around 4:30 am, and begin your day with the invigorating traditional energy drink known as «Wayusa.» This herbal tea, derived from the leaves of a sacred tree found in the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle, holds deep cultural significance for the indigenous people. Immerse yourself in the ritual, which includes listening to songs in the local language, engaging in meditation, and exploring the interpretation of dreams. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will offer a glimpse into the harmony, peace, and joy that the South American indigenous communities embrace.

Wayusa has been an integral part of the Amazonian culture for over 2000 years. It is prepared by each family using leaves from their designated sacred tree, which grows abundantly in the equatorial rainforests of the region. After a fulfilling breakfast, you will board a motorized canoe for the journey back to El Coca, also known as Puerto Francisco de Orellana. From there, you will take a plane back to Quito, bringing an end to your remarkable adventure in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Your first stop will be at Lake Limpiopungo, nestled in the picturesque highlands of the park. Behold the awe-inspiring sight of Cotopaxi Volcano’s majestic cone, providing a stunning backdrop to the lake. As you admire the panoramic view, keep an eye out for the diverse bird species that inhabit the area, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of wild horses roaming the surroundings. For those who feel up to the challenge and have sufficient time, a hike to the Jose Ribas refuge awaits. Today’s itinerary takes you to the breathtakingly picturesque Quilotoa volcano lagoon. Prepare to be enchanted by its natural beauty as you embark on this captivating adventure.

Upon arrival, you’ll have the option to choose between two delightful experiences. The first option is to walk along the rim of the crater, allowing you to savor the magnificent views that unfold before you. Bask in the splendor of the surrounding landscapes and marvel at the awe-inspiring panorama.

Alternatively, for a more immersive encounter, you can opt to hike down the path that leads to the crater lake. Descend into the heart of Quilotoa, where you’ll witness the tranquil beauty of the turquoise waters. Take your time to soak in the serenity and appreciate the unique atmosphere of this natural wonder.

As the return journey can be a bit longer, especially uphill, you’ll have the option to rent a mule for the uphill hike. This provides a convenient and comfortable way to navigate the terrain while ensuring you have ample energy to enjoy the rest of the day’s activities.

After the Quilotoa adventure, we’ll continue our journey toward Baños, a charming town known for its natural wonders. You’ll spend the night here, immersing yourself in the warm hospitality and embracing the tranquility of this delightful destination.

BAÑOS – CHIMBORAZO – RIOBAMBA

After a delightful breakfast in Baños, we will embark on an exciting day of exploration. Before leaving Baños, we will visit the magnificent Pailon del Diablo, a stunning waterfall that will leave you in awe of nature’s power and beauty. Marvel at the cascading waters and immerse yourself in the breathtaking surroundings.

Following our visit to Pailon del Diablo, we will continue our journey toward the impressive Chimborazo volcano. Along the way, keep an eye out for glimpses of this majestic peak, which will gradually reveal itself as we approach. The sight of Chimborazo is truly awe-inspiring, and it serves as a constant companion during our travels.

If the altitude does not pose any issues for you, we highly recommend taking a walk to the Carrell Refuge, located at an elevation of 4,800 meters. This exhilarating trek will reward you with a splendid view of the valleys and mountains that surround Chimborazo. Allow yourself to be captivated by the vastness and beauty of the landscape from this elevated viewpoint.

After this unforgettable experience, we will continue our journey toward the charming Andean town of Riobamba. Nestled amidst picturesque surroundings, Riobamba offers a tranquil atmosphere and warm hospitality. Here, you will find a comfortable place to rest and rejuvenate for the night.

RIOBAMBA – INGAPIRCA – CUENCA

Today marks another day of exploration as we continue our southward journey through Ecuador’s captivating landscapes. Take your time to soak in the beauty of the mountain scenery that unfolds before you, immersing yourself in the serenity of the surroundings.

Our first stop of the day is at Ingapirca, a significant archaeological site that holds great historical and cultural importance. These ruins date back to the Pre-Inca era and offer fascinating insights into the civilizations that once thrived in this region. Explore the remnants of ancient structures and gain a deeper understanding of the rich history that shaped Ecuador’s past.

As the day progresses, we will make our way towards the enchanting city of Cuenca, renowned for its architectural beauty and cultural heritage. Often hailed as one of the most beautiful cities in South America, Cuenca invites you to discover its charming streets, adorned with colonial-style buildings and vibrant markets. Immerse yourself in the local atmosphere, marvel at the intricately designed churches, and admire the artistic craftsmanship that adorns the city’s plazas.

In the late afternoon, you will arrive in Cuenca, where you will find a comfortable place to spend the night. Take the opportunity to explore the city at your leisure, savoring the unique ambiance and basking in the cultural treasures that Cuenca has to offer.
